An image format becomes useful when your tools can open it. In October 2026, JPEG XL received significant browser announcements, making this a good time to explore it with your own images.

Image2JXL is our native macOS app for local JPEG XL conversion. Import images or folders, process files in batches, and export JXL to familiar formats when needed.

What the browser announcements say

As of October 9, 2026:

BrowserOfficial update
ChromeGoogle announced decoding support starting with Chrome 155 on October 6.
EdgeMicrosoft's October 8 Edge 155 web platform notes confirm JXL decoding, including progressive decoding.
FirefoxMozilla moved planned default enablement from 157 to 158. Nightly remains enabled by default; 157 retains the Firefox Labs option.
SafariWebKit added JPEG XL support in Safari 17.0.

Sources: Chrome announcement, Edge 155 release notes, Mozilla's updated plan, and WebKit's Safari 17.0 overview.

Version support does not mean every visitor has upgraded. Firefox 158 default enablement remains a plan, and individual platforms and image features still need testing.

Why explore JPEG XL?

JPEG XL offers lossy and lossless compression, plus reversible JPEG transcoding. Google highlights high-fidelity photography, lossless compression, and progressive decoding as useful applications. Try representative files rather than assuming a fixed size reduction. Source: Chrome announcement

Pixel-lossless encoding preserves decoded pixels. Reversible JPEG transcoding preserves the information needed to reconstruct a supported original JPEG. Those are different guarantees.

Edge's notes also list wide color gamut, HDR, high bit depth, and progressive decoding. These are format and browser capabilities; an app's individual conversion paths require their own checks. Source: Edge release notes

Meet Image2JXL for Mac

Image2JXL processes images locally without uploading them to an online conversion service. Its features include:

  • JPEG XL conversion from JPEG, PNG/APNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, EXR, NetPBM, and PFM.
  • Lossless JPEG mode for reversible conversion of supported JPEG/JFIF inputs.
  • JXL export to JPEG, PNG, or GIF.
  • Batch imports from files and folders, with per-file conversion status.
  • Output location options and EXIF/XMP preservation on supported paths.

Pro includes converting more than 10 queued files, folder structure preservation, and moving originals to Trash after successful conversion. Keep important originals until you have checked the results.

If a JXL lacks usable JPEG reconstruction data, JPEG export can use ordinary JPEG encoding. A resulting .jpg is not automatically the original JPEG restored. Read our Image2JXL introduction for more detail.

Start with a small batch

Choose representative JPEGs, select the appropriate mode, and export into a separate folder. Compare size and appearance. For reversible archiving, restore a sample to JPEG and compare SHA-256 hashes: matching hashes confirm byte-for-byte recovery. Our lossless conversion guide explains the steps.

For websites, test target browsers and retain JPEG, WebP, or AVIF fallbacks. Check the whole delivery path, including your CMS and CDN, before expanding deployment.

Growing browser support makes JPEG XL worth evaluating for photography, storage, and web images. Image2JXL gives Mac users a local interface for that exploration.
